The Gentlemen’s Loafer

Not all loafers are created equal! If you are going to be the gentleman of all gentlemen, in regards to a loafer, you are looking at top designers and spending an obscene amount of cash. For those of you, who dream, check out Lord Loafers! They are my favorite right now, but seriously not a reality! Today I chose three different types of loafers out of Josh aka my husband’s closet. (He makes me live in reality every day.) The selection below is for the everyday gentleman, the “realistic” gentleman.

The Penny Loafer-

Let’s begin with the penny loafer. It has taken years for me to get Josh to wear penny loafers. He never would because they were too “dad” and then his wardrobe just wasn’t ‘”mature” enough for them. FINALLY the stars aligned- well really, I got a great deal on a pair that he actually considered liking, and he was hooked! The penny loafer has been around since the 1930’s and they are still a big seller! In every purchase you make consider what you are buying it for. I chose a penny loafer to make Josh’s chino pants a little dressier and to give his suits a little more of a “summer feel!” You can pair penny loafers with denim, however, I do think, it goes according to the outfit. I am just not crazy about them with denim… but it can be done!

The Boat Shoe Loafer-

The boat shoe loafer is such an easy spring to summer staple. Some people wear them all year round. That is your preference, however, we do not. The boat shoe loafer is so easy with almost every outfit of my husband’s. He wears them with chinos, chino shorts, and jeans. You can wear boat shoe loafers with anything from a t-shirt to a sport coat! I would not pair boat shoe loafers with a suit. It’s like wearing flip-flops with a gown.

The Driving Loafer-

I would say the driving loafer is an extra purchase. They are not a need, they are an extra. Like 99% of my purchases, I got a very good deal on these! Driving Loafers can be worn with anything and everything. Yes, you can wear them with a suit, but again, I’m not sold on the idea. I think it really depends on the brand, color and shape of the driving loafer as well as the color and style of the suit. For this particular pair I would not pair them with a suit. I believe they are better casual!

Before you run out and buy your loafer consider your current outfit selection. Which choice will go with more! Make the most of what you have now and add to it as you go!
